He would do anything for Finny. He would break his own leg for Phineas. He would die for Phineas if he had the chance to. Finny would be sad if Gene died. But Finny would accept the fact that Gene would do anything for him. Gene would want Finny to move on and do better things in life.

Gene thinks that he always has a hatred for anything or anyone. Gene was jealous at Finny for being so amazing that he shook Finny out of the tree. Gene puts the hatred in things that he loves to make it seem like he was right.

I think it means that Gene always had something bad in the things he wanted. For example he was bestfriends with Finny then he put in his jealously and made it dark.

Gene had hatred in anything and if it wasn't jealousy he would put it there.

Gene wants things to have a bad side. For example when he saw how amazing Finny was at everything he got jealous and made him fall out of the tree.

Gene has been so blinded by anger and jealousy in this book. Because of Gene's anger he is able to look at a situation or a person and see that bad in them. Even if this bad wasn't there, Gene was able to put it there in his mind; just like he did with Finny.

I think this quote meant that he always had a jealousy instinct towards Finny. I know Gene cares for Finny as his best friend but his jealousy consumed him.

I think this means that he always had something bad in what he wanted. And that when he was jealous of Finny something bad always happened with that. His friendship with Finny got worse from his jealousy.

I think that this quote means that his jealousy and hatred is controlling him. Gene is so used to there being something deadly lurking in everything he does that he ends up putting the hatred with his best friend.

I think that the quote means that gene let his jealousy take over him and he takes it out in finny because finny is better then him.

The ideal friendship was what he wanted, loved, and wass what he had... Until he started second guessing it. He started to make himself believe Finny had a dark side to him that was jealous and hateful, so he started to feel that way himself. That's when he went and acted on these ignorant thoughts, adding a deadly touch to something he loved.

I think he explained this very well how he thought it meant that Gene always had something bad in the things he wanted. And that Gene's jealousy got in the way and made it dark.

I agree with you Cal. Jealousy did destroy his friendship with Finny.

Throughout the book, Gene has only been able to look at the negative side of things. I think this negativity refers to the 'darkness'. For example, in Gene's friendship with Phineas, he was only able to look at the fact that Finny was so much 'better' than him instead of looking at what a good friend Finny was.

Gene is constantly trying to be equal to others - especially Finny. The only way he feels he can do that is by putting his own evil side into Finny.
